A Primary Health Centre for all the villages was the basic infrastructure available. The Nurse could not reach out to all villages since there were no roads and no buses plying to the villages. Reaching out to the hamlets was all the more difficult and hence not being done.
First Contact Care Programme through Health Workers:
Primary First Conatc Care programme for all by training the young men and women from among the community. And trained, in house to provide curative, preventive and promotive Primary health services. This programme was started in 1989 and continued, upgraded till date. It was initiated for about 3000 families expanded now to another 2000 families.
Rehabilitation for the disabled programme:
This programme then evolved to give special dimension of caring for the disabled. It covered the old Igatpuri Taluka.. In 2000, the Lifeline Express of Impact Foundation was stationed at Igatpuri Railway Station. VACHAN had orgainized support to mobilize beneficiaries, also organized a network for technical support from experts from Nashik incl NAB India, College of Social Work, Nehru Yuva Kendra, IMA Nasik, Association of ENT Surgeons, Civil Hospital, Indian Red Cross, Rotary Club, Lion’s Club etc. More than 600 children benefited
It trained CBR Workers to screen, mobilize and refer them for rehabilitative services as well as their rights.
Ankur - Home based Newborn Care by the community health workers
Along with these programmes VACHAN participated in a social audit study of Infant Mortality. SEARCH, Gadchiroli coordinated this study and designed a programme for home based care for newborn with 6 other organisations across the State. Initially the programme was in the Igatpuri taluka. About 2000 families benefited. VACHAN could reduce neonatal mortality rate from 39 to 23. Now it has been extended into 20 tribal dominant villages in Igatpuri and Trimbak Taluka. It covers 22000 population.
Nutritional Rehabilitation Centers for the Malnourished Children:
Nasik District is a focal area when considering malnourished children. With the objective of reducing Grade III and IV malnourished children, an alliance of Socially Responsible Corporate, Government of Maharashtra, NGOs got together and formed an Alliance called Bhavishya Alliance. Last year, A model for rehabilitating the malnourished children with adequate, freshly cooked nutritious meal and health check was designed and implemented by VACHAN at Thanapada and Harsul. Trimbak Block A total of 60 children participated with a 50% drop in level of malnutrition within 6 months.
Training ASHA - CHWs
NRHM has is based on trained community health worker in each village to provide first contact care and referral. Directorate of NRHM through SATHI-CEHAT, Pune and a network of 5 other NGOs planned a model training of ASHA across the state. In July 2008, VACHAN trained a batch of 50 ASHA from Trimbak block. The second training phase is planned in September 2008.
Right from the beginning, VACHAN has been working in collaboration with relevant govt departments. The intervention had improved immunization coverage and antenatal care.
